Questions and answers

How much does a new concrete driveway cost?

Typical U.S. prices for a plain concrete driveway often run from about $6 to $12 per square foot. Thickness, size, access, base work, finish and local rates all change the total. Stamped or colored work costs more. Quote in writing. Ask each provider to list base prep, reinforcement, removal of old slab and finishing, so you can compare quotes fairly.

How long does a concrete driveway or patio take?

Most jobs follow the same order. First, the site is marked and prepped. Next, forms and base go in. Then the concrete is poured and finished. The slab then needs time to cure before use. Many driveways need about a week before cars drive on them. Ask the provider for a schedule in writing.

What should I ask a provider before work starts?

Use a short checklist. Ask about license and insurance, base depth, slab thickness, reinforcement, joint spacing and drainage. A good answer is specific and gives numbers. A red flag is a vague reply or pressure to sign right away. Ask for a written scope and a written quote. Check before pouring.

How does our hot, wet climate affect new concrete?

Heat can make concrete set too fast, which may cause cracks. Heavy rain and tropical storms can wash out a fresh surface or soften the base. Ask the provider how they plan for weather, such as pour timing, curing methods and rain cover. Good drainage away from the house also helps protect your foundation.

Why does the base matter so much?

First, the base. Concrete is only as steady as the ground under it. A poorly packed or soggy base can lead to settling, cracks and uneven slabs. Ask what material the provider uses, how deep it is and how it is compacted. A clear answer is a good sign. Skip anyone who calls it unimportant.

Will a new driveway or patio add to my home's value?

A well-built driveway or patio can improve curb appeal and daily use. That can help when you sell. A poor job can do the opposite and raise buyer concerns. Value depends on your market, so talk with a local agent. Quality work, clean finishing and proper drainage all help.

Can I get a quote without committing to anything?

Yes. When you request an estimate, you describe your project and get matched with a provider in our network. There is no obligation to hire anyone. Compare quotes in writing, ask questions and decide at your own pace. You can say no to any provider if the fit is not right.

Can a driveway or patio cause problems for my foundation?

It can if water drains toward the house. Slabs near a foundation should slope away from it. Ask the provider how they plan the slope and where runoff will go. If you already see foundation or soil problems, talk with a foundation specialist first, since a new slab will not fix them. Some providers can also point out what to watch for.
